Sessional Lecturer

Thang Nguyen is a PhD candidate in Finance at Auckland University of Technology (2022–present). He holds an MSc in Accounting and Finance (Finance concentration) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he was a joint winner of the Emeritus Professors’ Prize in 2015. He also graduated with First Class Honours in Finance from the University of Melbourne and has passed the CFA Level I exam. Earlier, he completed the Singapore–Cambridge GCE A‑level qualification.

Thang has hands‑on experience across investment analysis, tax consulting, and credit risk. He was an Investment Analyst at Techcom Securities (2017), a Transfer Pricing Tax Consultant at Deloitte Vietnam (2016–2017), and a Credit Risk Analyst Intern at Agribank (2013). Alongside industry roles, he has extensive teaching experience: Lecturer in International Finance and Derivatives at the University of Danang (2018–2022) and Teaching Assistant in Financial Risk Management at AUT (2024–present).

His current research explores how information quantity, task complexity, irrelevant information, and time pressure jointly shape decision quality and mental effort in valuation‑focused financial tasks. More broadly, he is interested in investor attention, information processing, and decision‑making in finance. He has published on related corporate finance topics, including global policy uncertainty and cross‑border M&A, target status in emerging‑market acquisitions, and CEO compensation following M&A.

He aims to help every learner build a confident, work‑ready finance toolkit—grounded in analytical thinking, ethical judgment, and clear communication. Thang emphasises learning by doing: real datasets, valuation and risk‑management problems, and collaborative projects. Students leave his classes with practical skills in financial modelling and data analysis, and a growth mindset for lifelong learning.

Having studied and worked across Vietnam, Singapore, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, he brings a global perspective to teaching and industry collaboration. He welcomes opportunities to connect with learners and partners who share an interest in applied finance and evidence‑based decision‑making.

Outside of work, Thang enjoys staying engaged with financial markets and emerging data‑analytics tools, playing soccer, and spending time with family.

He is grateful for scholarships that support his research (AUT Doctoral Scholarship; Vietnamese Government Doctoral Scholarship, Project 89).
