Studying proved so daunting at first that Vikavalu Tu鈥檌tavuki doubted she would reach the end of her health programme. But the mother of four graduates soon from the NZ Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support), Level 4 at Manukau Campus. And she is thrilled to have been accepted to study Enrolled Nursing in February at Manukau Institute of Technology. 鈥淢any times I wanted to give up because I often felt like I was the dumb one in the health and wellbeing class,鈥 she says. 鈥淏ut because of the support and encouragement I got every day from my classmates and my tutor, Dr Sadia Farzana, I decided to stay. Dr Sadia is the best tutor I have ever known- she鈥檚 one in a million.鈥
Tonga-born Vikavalu moved to Aotearoa when she was 16. For more than 30 years she has given back to the community as a support worker and rehabilitation coach at the Laura Fergusson Trust centre in Auckland. But the rehabilitation provider for young people with disabilities closed last year due to the financial fallout from the Covid-19 crisis. 鈥淥ne of the clients wanted me to look after him at home so I have been caring for him ever since.鈥
